Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a risk assessment model for predicting DVT within 60 days post-hospital discharge.
  • To identify patient risk factors associated with post-discharge DVT.
  • To create a risk profile for guiding clinical decisions.

  • Retrospective review of 380 patient records (190 with DVT, 190 without).
  • Analysis of computerized medical records from 1995-2002 for patients re-hospitalized within 60 days.
  • Application of univariate and multivariate logistic regression to identify risk variables.

  • A novel risk assessment model was created using identified risk factors.
  • High-risk category showed 93.2% VTE prevalence.
  • Moderate-risk and low-risk categories showed 52.9% and 12% VTE prevalence, respectively.

  • High-risk patients may benefit from anticoagulation therapy.
