Summary

Estrogen does not regulate gonadotropin secretion in boars, unlike in other species. Reducing estrogen levels via aromatase inhibition did not affect luteinizing hormone (LH) or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of inhibiting aromatase, thereby reducing endogenous estrogens, on gonadotropin secretion and testicular hormone production in boars.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-six pairs of boars were treated weekly with either a vehicle (control) or an aromatase inhibitor (Letrozole) from 1 week of age until castration at various ages (2-8 months).
  • Plasma levels of LH, FSH, testosterone (T), inhibin (INH), estradiol (E2), and estrogen conjugates (ECs) were measured.
  • Testicular tissue was analyzed for INH and T concentrations and aromatase activity.

  • Aromatase inhibition significantly reduced testicular aromatase activity by 90% and decreased E2 and ECs.
  • No significant changes were observed in acute, long-term, or postcastration LH and FSH levels.
  • Plasma and testicular T concentrations remained unchanged, while circulating INH levels were unaffected. However, testicular INH was elevated in treated boars.

Conclusions:

  • Estrogen does not appear to play a significant regulatory role in gonadotropin secretion in developing boars.
  • This finding contrasts with observations in males of several other species, highlighting a unique aspect of boar reproductive endocrinology.
