Summary

Ovarian carcinoid tumors in five patients caused severe constipation. This symptom improved after surgery, likely due to the tumor producing peptide YY (PYY), which slows intestinal movement.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Ovarian carcinoid tumors can present with severe, long-term constipation.
  • The cause of constipation in these cases is hypothesized to be a biologically active substance, not solely mechanical compression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential role of peptide hormones in causing constipation associated with ovarian carcinoid tumors.
  • To identify specific biologically active substances produced by the tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of tumor tissue from five patients with ovarian carcinoid and preoperative constipation.
  • Assessment of reactivity to 17 amine and peptide hormones.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A high prevalence of peptide YY (PYY)-positive cells was observed in all studied carcinoid tumors.
  • PYY-positive cells constituted over 50% of tumor cells in each patient.
  • Postoperative reduction in constipation symptoms was noted.
  • Conclusions:

    • Peptide YY (PYY) is strongly implicated as the causative agent of severe constipation in patients with ovarian carcinoid tumors.
    • PYY's pharmacologic action of inhibiting intestinal motility likely explains the observed symptom.
