Insights
Long-acting calcium antagonists effectively reduce cardiovascular events and manage blood pressure (BP) variations. These drugs are particularly beneficial for addressing morning hypertension and abnormal BP fluctuations.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Long-acting calcium antagonists are widely used for cardiovascular event reduction.
- Their efficacy is notable in Japan, a region with high stroke prevalence.
- Calcium antagonists play a crucial role in managing hypertension and associated risks.
Purpose:
- To review the evidence supporting the use of long-acting calcium antagonists in reducing cardiovascular events.
- To highlight the benefits of calcium antagonists beyond simple blood pressure reduction, including managing BP variability and morning hypertension.
Summary:
- Established evidence indicates that long-acting calcium antagonists significantly reduce cardiovascular events.
- These agents demonstrate superior risk reduction compared to other antihypertensive drugs.
- They effectively control blood pressure (BP), improving morning hypertension and abnormal BP variations.
Impact:
- Calcium antagonists offer a valuable therapeutic option for cardiovascular risk management.
- Consideration of home and ambulatory BP monitoring alongside clinic BP is recommended for optimal patient management.
- The findings underscore the importance of calcium antagonists in clinical practice, especially in populations with high stroke incidence.
Abstract:
Many evidences have been established about reduction of cardiovascular event of long-acting calcium antagonists. It has been reported that long-acting calcium antagonists reduce cardiovascular risk more than other drugs, and calcium antagonists are important in Japan, where stroke is very popular and calcium antagonists are widely used. Calcium antagonists have not only strength and sharpness of reduction blood pressure (BP), but also improve morning hypertension and abnormal variation of BP through appropriate reduction of BP. Calcium antagonists might be used after due consideration home and ambulatory BP in addition to clinic BP.
