Summary

This study evaluated the use of a test called carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) to detect heavy alcohol consumption in hospital patients. Researchers tested the CDT assay in two groups of patients: those from a drug and alcohol unit and a gastroenterology clinic. Blood samples were collected and CDT levels were measured. The study found the test had a high specificity (95%) and sensitivity (80%) for detecting heavy drinking, defined as 60 g/day. Liver disease had little effect on the test results, and high alcohol intake was the main factor influencing elevated CDT levels. The test provided useful diagnostic information not available from routine tests and was effective in monitoring patients over four years. The authors concluded that the CDT test is a valuable tool in hospital practice where patient histories may be unreliable.
