Summary

Radiologic findings correlate with small renal cell carcinoma architecture. Ultrasound and CT imaging can help differentiate tumor types based on echogenicity and vascularity, aiding diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Small renal cell carcinoma (RCC) often presents incidentally.
  • Accurate preoperative characterization is crucial for treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate radiologic findings with the pathologic architecture of small renal cell carcinoma (≤3 cm).
  • To assess the utility of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and angiography in differentiating RCC subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 36 patients with small RCC.
  • Correlation of imaging findings (US, CT, angiography) with surgical pathology.
  • Classification of tumors based on histologic architecture (solid, papillary, tubular, multilocular cystic).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Tumor cell arrangement correlated with radiologic appearance, particularly vascularity and echogenicity.
  • Solid architecture RCCs were hypoechoic and hypervascular; papillary, tubular, and cystic types were hyperechoic and hypovascular.
  • Hemorrhage within tumors caused hyperattenuation on CT; tumor capsules were identified in 69% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • Radiologic features, especially US echogenicity and angiographic vascularity, can predict the histologic architecture of small renal cell carcinomas.
  • Imaging characteristics provide valuable preoperative information for small RCC management.
