Area of Science:

  • Medical Diagnostics
  • Anesthesiology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Difficult intubation presents significant risks during emergency procedures.
  • Undiagnosed anatomical variations can lead to airway management complications.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old patient experienced difficult and traumatic intubation prior to emergency esophagoscopy.
  • The underlying cause, stylohyoid ligament calcification, was not initially suspected.

Findings:

  • Difficulty in lifting the epiglottis is a key indicator for suspecting stylohyoid ligament calcification.
  • Fiber-optic laryngoscopy is recommended for managing suspected cases.

Implications:

  • Early suspicion and appropriate diagnostic tools like fiber-optic laryngoscopy can prevent airway trauma.
