Abstract

Insights

The NIDEK MK-2000 microkeratome demonstrated a low incidence of intraoperative complications during LASIK flap creation. This study confirms its safety and reliability for refractive surgery procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Technology
  • Refractive Surgery

Background:

  • Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common refractive surgery.
  • Microkeratomes are essential for creating corneal flaps during LASIK.
  • Evaluating device-specific complication rates is crucial for surgical safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the rate of intraoperative complications associated with the NIDEK MK-2000 microkeratome.
  • To determine the safety and reliability of this specific microkeratome in LASIK procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 26,600 LASIK procedures.
  • Data collected from 5 outpatient excimer laser surgery centers.
  • Focus on intraoperative flap complications using the NIDEK MK-2000.

Main Results:

  • A total of 65 (0.244%) intraoperative complications were recorded.
  • Specific complications included free caps (0.086%), incomplete passes (0.049%), epithelial defects (0.049%), buttonholes (0.041%), and irregular flaps (0.019%).
  • The vast majority of procedures (99.756%) had uneventful flap creation.

Conclusions:

  • The NIDEK MK-2000 microkeratome exhibits a low incidence of intraoperative complications.
  • The device is deemed safe and reliable for LASIK flap creation.
  • Findings support the continued use of the NIDEK MK-2000 in refractive surgery.
