Subclinical epileptiform EEG discharges (EED) can cause transitory cognitive impairment (TCI) in epilepsy patients. Further research is needed to understand TCI

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurophysiology

Context:

  • Epileptiform EEG discharges (EED) are common in epilepsy and other conditions.
  • Transitory cognitive impairment (TCI) can be detected during EEG testing.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the relationship between EED and cognitive task performance.
  • To quantify the occurrence of TCI in patients with EED.

Summary:

  • Thirty patients with generalized or diffuse EED underwent EEG with cognitive tasks.
  • TCI was identified in 43.3% of patients during EED.
  • Subclinical EED were found to be associated with cognitive impairment.

Impact:

  • Confirms that EED, even when subclinical, can impact cognition.
  • Highlights the need for further research into TCI relevance and EED treatment thresholds.
