Family physicians see many skin conditions, with 21% of patients presenting for dermatologic issues. Infectious and inflammatory skin diseases were most common, influenced by location and patient demographics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the percentage of patients presenting with dermatologic disease to a family medicine physician.
  • To identify the most common dermatologic disorders seen in a family medicine practice.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review was conducted at a private family medicine practice in Islamorada, FL.
  • Data were collected over 12 office days between May and June 2004.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-one percent of all patients seen had at least one skin problem.
