Abstract:
A 45 year old female presented with a discrete palpable mass in the right breast. Repeated fine needle aspiration of the mass yielded only adipose tissue and was reported as lipoma - breast. Microscopic features of the resected mass were evaluated in conjunction with the clinical and gross pathologic finding and a diagnosis of hamartoma was established. The histological concept of hamartoma of the breast as described in the literature is reviewed. Here we report this rare case of mammary hamartoma with an unusual abundance of adipose tissue Repeated yield of only adipose tissue in an aspirate from a discrete palpable breast mass should suggest the possibility of a hamartoma.
