Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Head and neck surgery
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Osseous choristoma is a rare benign oral lesion, typically presenting as a bony mass in an abnormal location.
  • These lesions are most commonly found on the tongue, making submandibular occurrences exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old male presented with a submandibular lesion.
  • The lesion was surgically excised.
  • No recurrence was observed during a 28-month follow-up period.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of an osseous choristoma in the submandibular region.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the benign nature of the lesion, characterized by mature bone tissue.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that osseous choristomas, while benign, may occur in rare anatomical locations within the oral cavity.
  • Extended clinical and radiographic follow-up is crucial after surgical management to ensure no recurrence, even for histologically benign lesions.
