Summary

Working with visual display units (VDUs) does not increase the risk of spontaneous abortion in pregnant women. This study found no evidence of increased risk associated with VDU use, providing reassurance for working mothers.

Background:

  • Concerns exist regarding potential reproductive health risks for pregnant women using visual display units (VDUs) in the workplace.
  • Previous studies have yielded mixed results on the association between VDU use and spontaneous abortion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between occupational exposure to visual display units (VDUs) and the risk of spontaneous abortion among working women.
  • To provide evidence-based information for pregnant women and employers regarding VDU use and pregnancy outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted involving 150 nulliparous women with spontaneous abortions (cases) and 297 nulliparous women attending antenatal care (controls).
  • Data on VDU exposure, including active use and passive proximity, were collected through structured interviews.

    • No statistically significant increased risk of spontaneous abortion was observed in women who used VDUs compared to those who did not (OR = 0.9, 95% CI = 0.6-1.4).

    • These findings remained consistent after adjusting for various potential confounding variables.

    Conclusions:

    • Pregnant women occupationally exposed to visual display units (VDUs) are not at an increased risk of clinically diagnosed spontaneous abortion.
    • The study provides reassurance to the significant number of women who use VDUs in their professional roles.
    • Consistent findings with other recent research strengthen the conclusion that VDU use poses no discernible risk to pregnancy.
