Summary

Digitizing markers are essential for accurately measuring movement variability in treadmill running. Without markers, the assessment of joint angles and movement objectivity is unreliable and not recommended for research.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Sports Science
  • Human Movement Analysis

Background:

  • Accurate quantification of movement variability is crucial in biomechanical analyses, particularly in treadmill running.
  • Previous methods for assessing movement variability have varied in their reliability and objectivity.
  • Understanding the contribution of movement variability to total variability is key for interpreting running mechanics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the proportion of total variability attributable to movement variability under marker-based and markerless conditions during treadmill running.
  • To assess the reliability and objectivity of movement variability estimation with and without digitizing markers.

Main Methods:

  • Comparison of manually digitized marker data with auto-tracking data for joint angles.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Calculation of movement variability contribution (omega-squared) across four operators in both marker and no-marker conditions.
  • Evaluation of objectivity using group designs and inter-operator reliability in both conditions.
  • Main Results:

    • Marker conditions yielded high contributions of movement variability to total variability (97% knee, 93% hip), demonstrating reliable estimation.
    • No-marker conditions showed significantly lower and unreliable contributions (72% knee, 48% hip).
    • Objectivity (inter-operator reliability) was excellent with markers (97% knee, 91% hip) but poor without markers (47% knee, 15% hip).

    Conclusions:

    • Digitizing markers are essential for reliable and objective assessment of movement variability in treadmill running.
    • Markerless motion analysis is not recommended for accurately estimating movement variability due to significant loss of reliability and objectivity.
    • The findings underscore the importance of marker-based motion capture for robust biomechanical research in running.
