Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Urology
  • Child Psychiatry

Background:

  • Pollakiuria (frequent urination) is infrequently reported in children with tic disorders (TD).
  • Understanding its characteristics in this population is important for accurate diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical characteristics of pollakiuria in children diagnosed with tic disorders.
  • To investigate the course and potential associations of pollakiuria in this specific pediatric group.

Main Methods:

  • A one-year observational study was conducted at a Tourette Syndrome (TS) Clinic.
  • Patients with TD presenting with pollakiuria were identified and their clinical data analyzed.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nine out of 467 children (1.9%) with TD exhibited pollakiuria, with a mean age of 7.4 years.
  • Most cases resolved within 2-6 months; however, two patients experienced persistent pollakiuria.
  • Obsessive-compulsive behaviors were noted in eight patients, and anxiety triggers in three.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pollakiuria in children with TD is uncommon and typically benign, similar to cases without tics.
    • The condition can fluctuate over time, mirroring tic disorder patterns.
    • Pollakiuria may represent a tic or compulsion rather than solely an anxiety-related symptom.
