Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Thrombosis Research
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) can be a serious complication of cardiac conditions.
  • Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) formation is often associated with impaired cardiac function and specific risk factors.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male presented with multiple pulmonary emboli and an incidentally discovered large left ventricular thrombus.
  • Transthoracic echocardiography revealed global cardiac dilation and severely reduced left ventricular function.

Findings:

  • Medical management with warfarin therapy led to complete resolution of the left ventricular thrombus within 10 weeks.
  • No underlying cause for the thrombus was identified, and the patient remained free of embolic events.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores the possibility of large ventricular thrombus formation in the absence of typical risk factors.
  • Successful medical management of LVT with anticoagulation offers a potential therapeutic strategy in select cases.
