Muscle coenzyme Q10 deficiency causes weakness and elevated creatine kinase. High-dose CoQ10 supplementation significantly improved muscle strength and normalized creatine kinase levels in patients.
Area of Science:
- Biochemistry
- Neurology
- Genetics
Background:
- Muscle coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency is a rare condition affecting mitochondrial energy production.
- It can lead to various neuromuscular symptoms, including muscle weakness.
Observation:
- Three unrelated patients with sporadic CoQ10 deficiency presented with proximal muscle weakness, elevated serum creatine kinase (CK), and lactate.
- Muscle biopsies revealed lipid storage myopathy and combined deficiencies in respiratory chain complexes I and III, with CoQ10 levels below 50% of normal.
Findings:
- Oral high-dose CoQ10 supplementation resulted in dramatic improvement in muscle strength.
- Serum CK levels were normalized following CoQ10 treatment.
Implications:
- This study highlights the efficacy of high-dose CoQ10 supplementation in treating muscle CoQ10 deficiency.
- Early diagnosis and intervention with CoQ10 can significantly improve outcomes for patients with this condition.
