Summary

Takayasu arteritis patients exhibit a high prevalence of atherosclerotic plaques, similar to those with systemic lupus erythematosus. This suggests a potential link between Takayasu arteritis and accelerated atherosclerosis.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Rheumatology
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Chronic inflammatory diseases like SLE and rheumatoid arthritis are linked to accelerated atherosclerosis.
  • Takayasu arteritis, a large-vessel vasculitis, shares inflammatory pathways that may predispose to atherosclerosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of atherosclerotic plaques and intima-media thickness (IMT) in patients with Takayasu arteritis.
  • To compare atherosclerosis markers in Takayasu arteritis patients with those in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • B-mode ultrasonography was used to assess atherosclerotic plaques and IMT in the carotid arteries of 30 Takayasu arteritis patients, 45 SLE patients, and 50 healthy controls.
  • Traditional atherosclerosis risk factors were also evaluated in all study groups.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Atherosclerotic plaques were more frequent in Takayasu arteritis (27%) and SLE (18%) patients compared to controls (2%; p=0.005).
  • Mean overall IMT was significantly higher in Takayasu arteritis patients (0.95±0.31 mm) versus SLE patients (0.58±0.10 mm) and controls (0.59±0.08 mm; p<0.001).
  • Plaque presence was associated with age in both Takayasu arteritis and SLE cohorts.

Conclusions:

  • Takayasu arteritis patients demonstrate a high rate of atherosclerotic plaques.
  • The frequency of atherosclerotic plaques in Takayasu arteritis is comparable to that observed in SLE patients.
  • These findings suggest Takayasu arteritis may be associated with increased atherosclerosis.
