Summary

This study shows that LASIK using the ALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser is safe and effective for correcting hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. The laser system achieved refractive goals in most patients across low, moderate, and high treatment groups.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery
  • Laser Vision Correction

Background:

  • Hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism are common refractive errors.
  • Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a popular surgical option for correcting refractive errors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the ALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser system for LASIK procedures.
  • To assess outcomes for hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism correction.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 120 consecutive LASIK cases using the ALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser.
  • Patients were categorized into low, moderate, and high hyperopia groups.
  • Evaluated parameters included refractive error, visual acuity, higher-order aberrations, and contrast sensitivity up to 12 months postoperatively.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 93% of eyes had 12-month follow-up.
  • Refractive goal achievement within +/- 0.50 D was 92% (low), 79% (moderate), and 71% (high) hyperopia groups.
  • No significant loss of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) was observed; higher-order aberrations increased in the high hyperopia group.

Conclusions:

  • Hyperopic LASIK with the WaveLight ALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser is safe and effective.
  • The procedure successfully corrects low, moderate, and high hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism.
  • The laser system demonstrates reliable outcomes for a range of hyperopic refractive errors.
