Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • Plain abdominal radiographs are frequently used in medical assessments.
  • Clinicians often interpret these films, influencing patient management decisions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the interpretation skills of doctors across different specialties and seniority levels.
  • To assess the accuracy in identifying normal/abnormal radiographs and normal bowel dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • 76 doctors from Accident & Emergency, Medicine, Surgery, and Radiology participated.
  • Participants diagnosed 14 plain abdominal radiographs and provided normal bowel dimensions.
  • Scoring was based on correct identification, diagnosis, and dimension recall.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Radiology and Surgery departments scored higher than Medicine and Accident & Emergency.
  • Senior doctors (consultants) demonstrated significantly better interpretation skills than junior doctors.
  • A low percentage of doctors correctly identified normal small and large bowel dimensions.

Conclusions:

  • Doctor seniority positively correlates with plain abdominal radiograph interpretation proficiency.
  • All doctors would benefit from enhanced training in radiograph interpretation.
  • Radiologist reporting and senior confirmation of decisions are advised for clinical uncertainties.
