Summary

Saw palmetto extract did not significantly improve symptoms or urinary flow in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) compared to placebo over one year. This study found no objective benefits for BPH treatment with saw palmetto.

Background:

  • Saw palmetto is a popular herbal supplement used by millions for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • It is frequently recommended as an alternative to conventional BPH medications.
  • Evidence supporting its efficacy for BPH symptoms remains under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of saw palmetto extract in treating moderate-to-severe benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms.
  • To compare saw palmetto extract against a placebo in a randomized, double-blind trial.

Main Methods:

  • A one-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 225 men aged 49+ with moderate-to-severe BPH symptoms.
  • Participants received either saw palmetto extract (160 mg twice daily) or a placebo.
  • Primary outcomes included changes in American Urological Association Symptom Index (AUASI) scores and maximal urinary flow rate.

Main Results:
