Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Dermatofibromas can induce epidermal changes, including basaloid cell proliferation.
  • These changes can resemble basal cell carcinoma, though true co-occurrence is rare.

Observation:

  • A case of dermatofibroma with overlying basaloid proliferation is presented.
  • The basaloid proliferation was morphologically indistinguishable from basal cell carcinoma.

Findings:

  • The epidermal changes over the dermatofibroma mimicked basal cell carcinoma.
  • This highlights a potential diagnostic challenge in dermatopathology.

Implications:

  • Understanding reactive epidermal changes over dermatofibromas is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
  • Distinguishing reactive basaloid proliferation from true basal cell carcinoma is important for patient management.
