Summary

Routine immunization coverage in West Bengal districts is poor, with high dropout rates jeopardizing child health and polio eradication efforts. Urgent interventions are needed to improve vaccination completion and address non-immunized children.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Routine primary immunization is critical for child survival and disease prevention.
  • Suboptimal vaccination coverage poses a significant threat to public health initiatives, including polio eradication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the status of routine primary immunization coverage in Birbhum and Purba Medinipur districts of West Bengal.
  • To identify deficiencies in the immunization program, such as dropout rates.

Main Methods:

  • A cluster sampling technique was employed, surveying 320 children in each district.
  • Data collection focused on coverage rates for specific vaccines (BCG, DPT, OPV, Measles) and full primary immunization.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Full primary immunization coverage was 53.13% in Birbhum and 61.56% in Purba Medinipur.
  • Coverage for DPT, OPV, and Measles vaccines was suboptimal in both districts.
  • High dropout rates were observed, with over one-third of children in Birbhum and one-fourth in Purba Medinipur not completing their vaccine series.

Conclusions:

  • Routine immunization coverage in the studied districts is poor and has shown little improvement.
  • The high dropout rate is a significant programmatic deficiency requiring urgent attention.
  • Improved immunization coverage is essential to reduce child morbidity/mortality and achieve polio eradication goals.
