Pacemaker (PM) patients with sleep issues experienced improved sleep quality and duration when the sleep rate (SR) function was activated. This enhancement in sleep parameters was observed in patients with cardiovascular conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Autonomic Nervous System

Background:

  • The cardiovascular system's regulation is influenced by the autonomic nervous system and sleep stages.
  • Sleep disordered breathing is linked to cardiac rhythm disorders.
  • Pacemaker (PM) therapy has shown potential in reducing respiratory events during sleep.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare sleep parameters in patients using a pacemaker with a sleep rate (SR) algorithm.
  • To evaluate the effect of the SR function (on vs. off) on sleep quality and duration during physical activity.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-two patients with pacemakers (Integrity PM) underwent a double-blind protocol.
  • Sleep rate (SR) function was alternately switched on and off.
  • Polysomnographic sleep recordings (PSG) were used to assess sleep parameters.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 54% of patients showed improved sleep efficiency with PM SR on.
  • Patients with improved sleep had lower REM sleep latency and fewer microarousals.
  • Activating PM SR function reduced microarousals per hour in sleepier patients.

Conclusions:

  • Pacemaker SR function activation significantly improves sleep quality and quantity in patients with sleep-related issues.
  • The rate-modulated capability of pacemakers can positively impact sleep parameters.
