This study introduces an automated method to find the distance to an acoustic source on a plate. The technique uses the MUSIC algorithm to analyze wave arrival times for accurate source-receiver separation determination.
Area of Science:
- Acoustics
- Signal Processing
- Materials Science
Background:
- Determining the location of transient acoustic sources is crucial in various engineering applications.
- Traditional methods often require multiple sensors or manual analysis, limiting efficiency.
- Automated techniques are needed for real-time source localization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an automated procedure for calculating the separation between a transient acoustic source and a detector on a plate.
- To utilize a novel time-estimation algorithm for accurate wave arrival time determination.
- To enable single-waveform analysis for source-receiver distance calculation.
Main Methods:
- An automated time-estimation algorithm was employed, assuming the signal consists of discrete band-limited impulses.
- The MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm was used in time-estimation mode.
- Key arrival times, including the lowest order antisymmetric (Ao) mode and Rayleigh wave, were automatically estimated.
Main Results:
- The algorithm successfully estimated the arrival times of the Ao mode and Rayleigh wave.
- By integrating plate properties with estimated arrival times, the distance to the acoustic source was calculated.
- The developed technique demonstrated the capability for automatic source-receiver separation determination.
Conclusions:
- An automated, single-waveform analysis method for determining transient acoustic source-detector separation on plates has been successfully developed.
- The MUSIC algorithm in time-estimation mode is effective for identifying critical wave arrival times.
- This technique offers an efficient and accurate solution for acoustic source localization problems.
