Background:

  • Hepatic lesions with malignant foci, previously termed adenomatous hyperplasia (AH) with malignant foci, are now classified as cancer.
  • AH with malignant foci are categorized into early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without nodules and HCC with early components featuring nodules.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of early HCC and HCC with early components.
  • To evaluate the utility of T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging in differentiating these early-stage HCC classifications.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study utilizing MRI was conducted on 20 early HCC lesions and 8 HCC with early components lesions.
  • Signal intensities of lesions were analyzed on T1-weighted and T2-weighted spin-echo images relative to the surrounding liver parenchyma.
