Summary
This study reports the first case of deciduoid mesothelioma, a rare cancer resembling pregnancy tissue, in a dog. Immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis confirmed its mesothelial origin.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Pathology
- Oncology
- Comparative Pathology
Background:
- Deciduoid mesothelioma is a rare epithelial mesothelioma variant.
- It is characterized by cytomorphologic resemblance to the decidua of pregnancy.
- Previously, it has only been described in human pathology.
Observation:
- A case of peritoneal mesothelioma with deciduoid features was identified in a 10-year-old female dog.
- The tumor presented as multiple whitish-gray nodules on the parietal peritoneum and mesentery.
- Histologically, the nodules consisted of large, proliferating, polygonal or ovoid cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm.
Findings:
- Immunohistochemical evaluation revealed coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin in neoplastic cells.
- Strong and diffuse cytoplasmic staining for these markers was observed.
- Ultrastructural analysis demonstrated long and slender mesothelial-type microvilli, confirming the mesothelial origin.
Implications:
- This report expands the known spectrum of deciduoid mesothelioma to veterinary pathology.
- It highlights the importance of immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis in diagnosing rare tumors.
- The findings contribute to understanding the comparative pathology of mesotheliomas.
