Decadron phonophoresis did not yield detectable serum dexamethasone levels in healthy students. Further research is required to confirm the effectiveness of this treatment method for systemic absorption.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacology
- Dermatology
- Physical Therapy
Background:
- Phonophoresis is a method for delivering medication through the skin using ultrasound.
- Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure serum dexamethasone levels following phonophoresis.
- To assess systemic absorption of dexamethasone via phonophoresis.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial with 40 healthy college students.
- Dexamethasone or placebo gel was applied to the forearm, followed by ultrasound treatment.
- Serum samples were collected before and after treatment, with subsequent draws at 15 and 30 minutes.
Main Results:
- No significant serum dexamethasone levels were detected in any of the collected samples.
- The study was discontinued due to the absence of detectable drug levels.
Conclusions:
- Dexamethasone phonophoresis, as administered in this study, did not lead to measurable systemic levels of the drug.
- The efficacy of dexamethasone phonophoresis for achieving systemic absorption requires further investigation.
