Summary

This study shows bone mineral density (BMD) around cemented acetabular components is repeatable with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Bone loss is minimal and temporary, returning to baseline within two years.

Background:

Cemented acetabular components are widely used in hip replacements.
Understanding bone mineral density (BMD) changes around these components is crucial for assessing implant stability and longevity.
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a common tool for BMD assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the repeatability of BMD measurements around cemented Charnley acetabular components using DXA.
To determine the longitudinal changes in BMD in the first 24 months post-surgery.
To characterize the pattern and extent of bone loss and recovery.
