Objective:
This review provides information about the current state of knowledge concerning alcohol prevention.
Methods:
The most important prevention strategies are presented along with data about their efficacy.
Results:
At present, the results of the available international research literature suggest, that the most effective strategies are taxation and price increases and the restriction of the purchase of alcohol. There is also positive evidence for interventions at the workplace and in the primary care system.
Conclusions:
To positively influence attitudes towards drinking before alcohol-associated problems are evident seems to be much more difficult, new approaches are necessary.
