Summary

Patients with chronic otitis media have a larger equivalent ear canal volume compared to healthy individuals. Treatment did not significantly alter this volume in infected ears.

Background:

  • The equivalent ear canal volume (EECV) typically ranges from 0.3-1.0 ml in children and 0.65-1.75 ml in adults.
  • Chronic otitis media (COM) can alter normal anatomical measurements, including EECV, depending on disease activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the differences in EECV among patients with COM, with and without active infection, compared to a control group.
  • To assess potential changes in EECV following clinical treatment for active COM.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, transversal cohort study involving 52 ears from patients diagnosed with COM.
  • EECV measurements were taken for ears with COM (active infection and inactive) and a matched control group.
  • Patients with active infection were evaluated before and after treatment.
