Summary

Prednisone significantly reduced chorea intensity and shortened remission time in children with Sydenham's chorea compared to placebo. This study found prednisone to be an effective treatment with no severe adverse events observed.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • Clinical Pharmacology

Background:

  • Sydenham's chorea is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements.
  • Effective treatment options for acute Sydenham's chorea are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of prednisone in treating acute Sydenham's chorea in pediatric patients.
  • To compare the reduction in chorea intensity and time to remission between prednisone and placebo groups.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, parallel study involving 22 children and teenagers with acute Sydenham's chorea.
  • Patients received either prednisone (2 mg/kg/day) or a placebo, with weekly evaluations for chorea intensity.
  • Chorea intensity was assessed using a standardized scale measuring presence, distribution, and interference with daily activities.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Prednisone treatment led to a significantly larger and persistent reduction in chorea intensity compared to placebo (P < 0.001).
  • The mean time to complete chorea remission was significantly shorter in the prednisone group (54.3 days) versus the placebo group (119.9 days) (P < 0.001).
  • Recurrence rates were similar between groups, and no severe adverse events were reported with prednisone use.

Conclusions:

  • Prednisone is an effective treatment for acute Sydenham's chorea in pediatric patients, demonstrating significant improvements in chorea severity and remission time.
  • The study supports the use of prednisone as a therapeutic option for Sydenham's chorea, with a favorable safety profile.
