Summary

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection caused acute retinal necrosis in a patient. Intraocular antibody production confirmed CMV as the cause of this severe eye condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Virology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Acute retinal necrosis is a severe ocular disease.
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a known cause of viral retinitis.

Observation:

  • A 76-year-old woman presented with unilateral acute retinal necrosis.
  • Elevated cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody titers were detected in both aqueous humor and serum.

Findings:

  • The serological pattern indicated a recent CMV infection.
  • A Goldmann-Witmer coefficient above 4 suggested intraocular production of CMV-specific antibodies.
  • This confirmed CMV as the causative agent of the retinal necrosis.

Implications:

  • The findings support CMV as an important cause of acute retinal necrosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Understanding intraocular antibody production aids in diagnosing and managing viral retinitis.
  • A novel etiopathogenic hypothesis for CMV-induced retinal necrosis is proposed.
