Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection typically presenting with a localized rash.
  • While predominantly seen in adults and immunocompromised individuals, disseminated herpes zoster has been documented in immunocompetent hosts.
  • Understanding the spectrum of herpes zoster presentation is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • This report details two pediatric cases of disseminated herpes zoster.
  • One child presented with severe malnutrition, leading to an immunocompromised state.
  • The immunocompromised child also experienced associated orbital septal cellulitis.

Findings:

  • Disseminated herpes zoster, though rare, can manifest in children.
  • Immunocompromised status, even secondary to malnutrition, increases the risk of extensive viral spread.
  • Orbital septal cellulitis is a potential complication in severe cases.

Implications:

  • Pediatricians and infectious disease specialists should consider disseminated herpes zoster in children with widespread rashes, especially if immunocompromised.
  • Early recognition and treatment are vital to prevent complications.
  • Further research into the specific risk factors and management of pediatric disseminated herpes zoster is warranted.
