Summary

This study shows that aged potato and banana tissues can absorb chloride even with cyanide present. This chloride uptake is supported by the plant respiration alternative pathway, with some inhibition of the transport process itself.

Area of Science:

  • Plant Physiology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Plant tissues possess cyanide-resistant respiration.
  • Chloride uptake is an essential physiological process in plants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate chloride uptake in cyanide-resistant plant tissues.
  • To determine the role of the alternative respiratory pathway in chloride absorption.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized aged potato and fresh banana slices.
  • Measured chloride uptake in the presence of cyanide and specific inhibitors.
  • Assessed the impact of chlorbenzhydroxamate on respiration and transport.

Main Results:

  • Established chloride uptake in aged potato and banana slices despite cyanide presence.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Demonstrated that cyanide-mediated chloride uptake relies on the alternative respiratory pathway.
  • Showed partial inhibition of chloride uptake by chlorbenzhydroxamate, indicating direct transport process inhibition.
  • Conclusions:

    • The alternative respiratory pathway supports chloride absorption in cyanide-resistant plant tissues.
    • Chlorbenzhydroxamate partially inhibits the chloride transport mechanism itself, not solely the alternative oxidase.
