Summary

This study found no significant differences in prostate phyto-estrogen levels between urban and rural Austrian men or across different regions. Individual patient variations were notable, despite the lack of population-level differences in enterolactone and genistein.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Endocrinology
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Asian populations exhibit lower prostate cancer incidence, potentially linked to higher dietary phyto-estrogen intake.
  • Phyto-estrogen levels are notably higher in Asian men compared to European populations.
  • This study investigates geographical and environmental variations in phyto-estrogen levels within Austria.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess differences in prostatic tissue levels of phyto-estrogens (enterolactone and genistein) within the Austrian population.
  • To compare phyto-estrogen levels between men from urban and rural environments in Austria.
  • To evaluate geographical variations in phyto-estrogen levels across different regions of Austria.

Main Methods:

  • Collected prostatic tissue samples from 103 men undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Quantified enterolactone (lignan representative) and genistein (isoflavone representative) levels using monoclonal antibody-based immunoassays.
  • Compared tissue levels based on residential environment (urban vs. rural) and geographical region.
  • Main Results:

    • Prostatic enterolactone and genistein levels showed no significant differences between urban and rural Austrian men.
    • Enterolactone and genistein levels were also similar across three distinct geographical regions within Austria.
    • A wide range of individual patient phyto-estrogen levels was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • No significant differences in prostatic enterolactone and genistein levels were detected between the studied Austrian populations.
    • The study highlights considerable inter-individual variability in phyto-estrogen tissue levels.
    • Further research may be needed to understand the factors contributing to individual variations.
