Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare condition where the embryonic sciatic artery remains in adults, supplying blood to the lower limb. This case series highlights a PSA complicated by an aneurysm, causing severe hemorrhage.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Embryology
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • It represents the persistence of the embryonic sciatic artery, which normally regresses after forming the main blood supply to the lower limb.
  • The reported incidence is very low, between 0.025% and 0.04%.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present two cases of persistent sciatic artery.
  • To describe a rare complication of PSA with an aneurysm leading to hemorrhage.
  • To increase awareness of this uncommon vascular anomaly.

Main Methods:

  • Case report presentation.
  • Review of relevant medical literature.
  • Clinical and radiological assessment of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Two cases of persistent sciatic artery were identified.
  • One case presented with a sciatic artery aneurysm.
  • The aneurysm resulted in a life-threatening hemorrhage, requiring urgent intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Persistent sciatic artery is a rare vascular anomaly with potential for serious complications.
  • Aneurysmal degeneration of the persistent sciatic artery can lead to critical bleeding.
  • Early diagnosis and management are crucial for favorable outcomes.
