Post-streptococcal uveitis (PSU) can be the primary sign of infection, often presenting in childhood. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with steroids and antibiotics lead to good visual outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Rheumatology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Post-streptococcal uveitis (PSU) is an under-recognized inflammatory eye condition.
  • It is associated with preceding streptococcal infections.

Observation:

  • A review of 11 cases (including 2 new ones) identified clinical features, immune mechanisms, and treatment outcomes.
  • Patients ranged from 5 to 56 years, with a mean age of 17.
  • Elevated antistreptolysin-O titres (ASOT) were common, with seasonal and age-related variations noted.

Findings:

  • Anterior uveitis was most common (72.7%), followed by intermediate uveitis (18.2%) and panuveitis (9.1%).
  • Most patients received topical steroids and oral antibiotics.
  • Four patients underwent adenotonsillectomy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The visual prognosis was generally good.
  • Implications:

    • Ophthalmologists should consider PSU in patients presenting with uveitis, especially children.
    • High suspicion is crucial for early diagnosis and management.
    • PSU can manifest solely as uveitis or alongside other post-streptococcal infection symptoms.
