Background:

  • Paragangliomas are rare tumors originating from neural crest cells, sharing histological similarities with pheochromocytomas.
  • Extra-adrenal paragangliomas predominantly occur in the superior or inferior para-aortic regions (71%).

Observation:

  • These tumors typically manifest as abdominal masses, frequently associated with back pain.
  • Hormonally active tumors are particularly well-visualized with computed tomography and I131 MIBG scintigraphy.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography and I131 MIBG scintigraphy have significantly enhanced the localization of paragangliomas.
  • Surgical excision is the primary treatment modality for paragangliomas.
