Background:

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland.
  • The association between Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes and Hashimoto's thyroiditis has been debated, particularly regarding specific HLA-DR types.

  • Restriction fragment polymorphism analysis was used to determine HLA-DR types in 86 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 100 controls.
  • Enzymatic DNA amplification and oligonucleotide probing were employed to analyze HLA-DPB and DQB alleles in a subset of patients.
  • Statistical analysis, including chi-squared tests, was performed to assess the significance of observed associations.

Main Results:

  • HLA-DR3 was found to be significantly more frequent in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis compared to controls (P < 0.01), with a relative risk of 2.23.
