Summary

Rats showed less responding to learned cues after overexpectation training. However, this reduced responding recovered over time, suggesting similarities with nonreinforcement effects in associative learning.

Background:

Pavlovian conditioning is a fundamental learning process.
Overexpectation is a phenomenon where conditioning to individual stimuli decreases after compound conditioning.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of overexpectation on stimulus responding in rats.
To examine the temporal dynamics of response recovery following overexpectation.

Main Methods:

Three experiments using Pavlovian magazine approach conditioning in rats.
Auditory and visual stimuli were paired with a food pellet.
Compound conditioning involved presenting stimuli together, followed by immediate or delayed testing.

Main Results:

Compound conditioning led to a decrement in responding to individual stimuli (overexpectation).
Response recovery was observed over time after the overexpectation procedure.
The decrements in responding showed recovery with a delay in testing.

Conclusions:

Overexpectation-induced response decrements share properties with nonreinforcement.
Temporal factors play a significant role in the recovery from overexpectation.
This study sheds light on the mechanisms of associative learning and extinction.
