Objective:
To review current surgical procedures for the relief of acute and chronic pain.
Conclusions:
Recent advances in knowledge of pain transmission and pain modulation have resulted in a more conservative approach to surgical intervention for the relief of pain. Those techniques which are contemporarily accepted as efficacious are outlined.
