    Summary

This study describes a rare cystic renal tumor with features of a partially differentiated nephroblastoma. This finding supports the theory that Wilms' tumors can mature into benign cystic lesions.

    Area of Science:

    • Renal pathology
    • Pediatric oncology
    • Tumorigenesis

    Background:

    • Solitary multilocular cysts of the kidney are benign cystic renal lesions.
    • Nephroblastomas, also known as Wilms' tumors, are the most common pediatric renal malignancies.
    • The histogenesis of Wilms' tumors and their potential for differentiation are areas of ongoing research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe an unusual cystic renal tumor with features suggestive of a partially differentiated nephroblastoma.
    • To investigate the potential for Wilms' tumor maturation into benign cystic lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of a unique cystic renal tumor.
    • Comparative analysis with known renal cystic lesions and nephroblastomas.

    Main Results:

    • The described tumor superficially resembled a solitary multilocular cyst.
    • Microscopic examination revealed significant amounts of proliferating undifferentiated renal blastema.
    • The tumor's features are consistent with a partially differentiated nephroblastoma.

    Conclusions:

    • The described tumor represents a potential example of a partially differentiated nephroblastoma.
    • This case provides evidence supporting the theory that Wilms' tumors can undergo maturation to form fully differentiated, benign cystic lesions.
