Summary

Laser beam wavefront curvature in interferometers increases fringe period. Imperfect beam recombination introduces a counteracting error, which can even prevail over the usual error, necessitating a correction equation.

Area of Science:

  • Optical metrology
  • Interferometry
  • Laser physics

Background:

  • Two-beam interferometers are crucial for precise displacement measurements.
  • Laser beam wavefront curvature is known to introduce systematic errors in fringe period calculations.
  • The degree of beam collimation influences the magnitude of this error.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of imperfect beam recombination on fringe period accuracy in two-beam interferometers.
  • To identify and quantify a previously unrecognized error source in interferometric displacement measurements.
  • To develop a correction equation for enhanced measurement precision.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of fringe period variations in two-beam interferometers.
  • Mathematical modeling of wavefront curvature effects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Investigating the influence of beam divergence and recombination quality.
  • Main Results:

    • Wavefront curvature systematically increases the fringe period, proportional to the squared beam divergence.
    • Imperfect beam recombination introduces an additional, counteracting fringe-period error.
    • This counteracting error can compensate for or even overcome the error caused by wavefront curvature.

    Conclusions:

    • A novel error source in interferometric displacement measurements due to imperfect beam recombination has been identified.
    • The interplay between wavefront curvature and recombination quality significantly affects fringe period accuracy.
    • A correction equation is provided to mitigate these combined errors and improve measurement reliability.
