    Summary

    Symptom-based written asthma action plans (WAP) reduce acute care visits in children. Peak flow monitoring in WAPs showed fewer symptomatic days, but symptom monitoring was preferred by children.

    • Evaluate the independent effect of WAP in children and adolescents with asthma.
    • Compare different types of WAP.

    Main Methods:

    • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
    • Searched Cochrane Airways Group Specialised Register, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL.
    • Included trials comparing WAP with no WAP or different WAP.

    Main Results:

    • Symptom-based WAP reduced acute care visits (RR 0.73).
    • Number needed to treat for symptom-based WAP was 9.
    • Children preferred symptom monitoring over peak flow monitoring.

    Conclusions:

    • Symptom-based WAP appear superior to peak flow WAP for preventing acute care visits.
    • Further research needed to confirm reasons for superiority.
