Summary

This study found a high prevalence of diabetes among elderly individuals receiving nursing care in Northern Norway. However, the rate of newly diagnosed diabetes requiring treatment was low, suggesting good quality of care.

Background:

Diabetes mellitus is a significant health concern in aging populations.
Assessing diabetes prevalence and care quality in elderly individuals receiving nursing care is crucial for public health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of known diabetes in elderly individuals receiving nursing care in Northern Norway.
To screen for undiagnosed diabetes cases using HbA1c measurements.
To evaluate the quality of diabetes care provided to this population.

Main Methods:

A population-based study in Tromsø, Norway, included individuals over 69 years receiving nursing care.
Data collection involved health questionnaires and HbA1c measurements.
Oral glucose tolerance tests were used to confirm diabetes in subjects with elevated HbA1c levels.

Main Results:

A high prevalence of known diabetes (20.2%) was observed among the 228 participants.
The mean age of diabetic subjects was 80.1 years with an average HbA1c of 7.6%.
Only a small number of subjects (six) had elevated HbA1c suggestive of undiagnosed diabetes, with only one case confirmed.

Conclusions:

There is a substantial prevalence of diabetes among elderly individuals requiring nursing care.
The low incidence of newly diagnosed diabetes needing treatment suggests effective diabetes management and care quality in the studied population.
The findings support the ongoing focus on diabetes care for the elderly in this region.
