Area of Science:

  • Geriatrics
  • Endocrinology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus is a significant health concern in aging populations.
  • Assessing diabetes prevalence and care quality in elderly individuals receiving nursing care is crucial for public health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of known diabetes in elderly individuals receiving nursing care in Northern Norway.
  • To screen for undiagnosed diabetes cases using HbA1c measurements.
  • To evaluate the quality of diabetes care provided to this population.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based study in Tromsø, Norway, included individuals over 69 years receiving nursing care.
  • Data collection involved health questionnaires and HbA1c measurements.
  • Oral glucose tolerance tests were used to confirm diabetes in subjects with elevated HbA1c levels.

Main Results:

  • A high prevalence of known diabetes (20.2%) was observed among the 228 participants.
  • The mean age of diabetic subjects was 80.1 years with an average HbA1c of 7.6%.
  • Only a small number of subjects (six) had elevated HbA1c suggestive of undiagnosed diabetes, with only one case confirmed.

Conclusions:

  • There is a substantial prevalence of diabetes among elderly individuals requiring nursing care.
  • The low incidence of newly diagnosed diabetes needing treatment suggests effective diabetes management and care quality in the studied population.
  • The findings support the ongoing focus on diabetes care for the elderly in this region.
