A new German questionnaire, the Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire (SDM-Q), was developed to measure shared decision-making. This validated instrument shows promising results but requires further refinement due to ceiling effects.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Patient-Centered Care
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Shared decision-making (SDM) is increasingly important in medical practice.
  • Existing German instruments for measuring SDM lack validity.
  • A validated tool is needed to assess the SDM process.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a theory-driven German questionnaire (SDM-Q) to measure the process of shared decision-making.
  • To establish the psychometric properties of the SDM-Q.

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical framework based on expert panel consensus of SDM steps.
  • Item generation using the Delphi method.
  • Validation using Rasch analysis on a mixed sample to ensure unidimensionality.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • An 11-item unidimensional scale was developed after removing 4 items.
  • Acceptable reliability for person measures (0.77) and high reliability for item difficulties (0.95).
  • Identified subgroup differences in item use and significant ceiling effects.

Conclusions:

  • The SDM-Q is a novel, rigorously validated instrument for measuring the SDM process.
  • Promising initial results indicate the need for further item development to address ceiling effects.
  • In-depth analysis is required to understand differential item functioning across conditions.
