Industrial solvent exposure, particularly aliphatic solvents, increases renal cortical echogenicity (RCE) in male workers. Altered RCE may indicate occupational exposure or other health issues, warranting further investigation.

Background:

  • Renal cortical echogenicity (RCE) is an ultrasound parameter reflecting kidney tissue properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the causes of altered renal cortical echogenicity (RCE) in workers exposed to industrial solvents.
  • To determine the relationship between RCE, solvent exposure, and biochemical/clinical parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Bilateral average RCE (AvRCE) and left renal cortex/spleen echo ratios (RCSplE) were measured in 22 industrial solvent-exposed workers and 19 controls.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to compare groups and assess correlations with exposure and clinical data.

  • Men exhibited higher AvRCE than women. Current and past aliphatic solvent exposure significantly increased AvRCE.

Conclusions:

  • Renal cortical echogenicity is influenced by occupational solvent exposure, potentially beyond structural changes, involving renal flow and macromolecular presence.
  • Altered RCE may serve as an indicator for occupational exposure assessment and general medical screening in the absence of known kidney disease.
