This study found no significant link between prior cholecystectomy or appendectomy and the development of microscopic colitis. Further research is needed to understand the causes of this common gastrointestinal condition.

Background:

  • Microscopic colitis causes chronic watery diarrhea of unknown origin.
  • Previous cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and appendectomy (appendix removal) have been investigated for their effects on other gastrointestinal conditions.
  • The relationship between these surgical procedures and microscopic colitis remains unstudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cholecystectomy and appendectomy as potential risk factors for microscopic colitis.
  • To determine if there is an association between these surgeries and the incidence of microscopic colitis.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study was conducted using the Rochester Epidemiology Project.
  • 130 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, diagnosed with microscopic colitis between 1985 and 2001 were identified as cases.

  • Rates of prior cholecystectomy and appendectomy in cases were compared to age-, gender-, and calendar year-matched community controls using conditional logistic regression.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant association was found between cholecystectomy and microscopic colitis (OR 0.7; 95% CI 0.3-1.5).
    • No significant association was found between appendectomy and microscopic colitis (OR 1.6; 95% CI 0.9-2.7).
    • Subgroup analyses for lymphocytic colitis and collagenous colitis yielded similar results.

    Conclusions:

    • Cholecystectomy and appendectomy do not appear to be significant risk factors for developing microscopic colitis.
    • The etiology of microscopic colitis remains largely unknown.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the causes of microscopic colitis.
