Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an uncommon inflammatory ulcerative skin condition.
  • PG is exceptionally rare in infants under one year of age, with limited pediatric case reports.

Observation:

  • A 6-month-old female infant presented with pyoderma gangrenosum.
  • The infant had no identifiable underlying medical conditions.
  • Lesions, typical for infantile PG, were noted on the face, buttocks, thighs, and extremities.

Findings:

  • The infant's pyoderma gangrenosum was effectively managed with oral prednisone.
  • The condition showed a favorable response to systemic corticosteroid therapy.
  • Complete healing of the lesions was achieved with the prescribed treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores that pyoderma gangrenosum can occur in infants without comorbidities.
  • Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with oral prednisone can lead to favorable outcomes in infantile PG.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal management of PG in this age group is warranted.
